It's The Little Things That Matter

It's the little things that makes us smile everyday. It's the meaningless things that make you get up every morning and smile at the world, ready to start a new day as the sun rises in the horizon.

As Lucia la de Flor, a good friend wrote on her blog, "I wake up happy, because although it is a bad day the sum of my life makes me think otherwise. I smile with the lungs, with the heart, with the throat, it is not necessary to open the lips and show our teeth." So do the same!

I came across a poem today in my Myth, Ritual and Symbol class. It is about how gratitude and how we can learn to appreciate every moment in life. Here it is and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Aimless Love

This morning as I walked along the lakeshore,
I fell in love with a wren
and later in the day with a mouse
the cat had dropped under the dining room table.

In the shadows of an autumn evening,
I fell for a seamstress
still at her machine in the tailor’s window,
and later for a bowl of broth,
steam rising like smoke from a naval battle.

This is the best kind of love, I thought,
without recompense, without gifts,
or unkind words, without suspicion,
or silence on the telephone.

The love of the chestnut,
the jazz cap and one hand on the wheel.

No lust, no slam of the door –
the love of the miniature orange tree,
the clean white shirt, the hot evening shower,
the highway that cuts across Florida.

No waiting, no huffiness, or rancor –
just a twinge every now and then

for the wren who had built her nest
on a low branch overhanging the water
and for the dead mouse,
still dressed in its light brown suit.

But my heart is always propped up
in a field on its tripod,
ready for the next arrow.

After I carried the mouse by the tail
to a pile of leaves in the woods,
I found myself standing at the bathroom sink
gazing down affectionately at the soap,

so patient and soluble,
so at home in its pale green soap dish.
I could feel myself falling again
as I felt its turning in my wet hands
and caught the scent of lavender and stone.

Two Inspirational Addresses

Throughout my high school years and the three semesters at Dominican University of CA I have come across two speeches. As a sophomore at Sonoma Valley High School I was presented to Steve Job's Commencement Address to Stanford and also as a sophomore at DU of CA, just a couple of weeks ago I came across J.K. Rowling's Commencement Address to Harvard. I was touched by both speeches. They do not cover the same topics, but each have incredible messages. Both J.K. Rowling and Steve Jobs have become great inspirations, unfortunately Jobs' is being given more recognition now that he is not with is than when he still walked among us. But I cannot complaint because he left a legacy behind, he revolutionized the world with his inventions, he changed animated movies, he,... he was a great human being. Hopefully there is a different path for J.K. Rowling, and that her work becomes more appreciated now that she is still with us.

I really urge you to listen to the following addresses and leave your opinion. Thank you.

In 2008, the Harry Potter series author, J.K. Rowling, gave a great Commencement Address to the graduating class at Harvard. What I liked about Rowling's address was that she talked about "failure" being a good thing. Without "failure" it is almost impossible to learn, and most importantly without imagination we are not really human beings. When Rowling referred to imagination she was not talking about creating a magical story or a world like Hogwarts; what she meant is that we as humans have the opportunity to use our imagination to put ourselves in other peoples shoes. Yes, empathy. Without empathy, I am sure this world would be a total chaos.

Now I come to the second video. This video is about what I think was the world's luckiest and smartest human being, Steve Jobs. On 2005, Steve Jobs gave the Commencement Address to Stanford University. Which by the way, Stanford is such a beautiful campus. In Job's address he could not have made it anymore clear to the students and anyone who reads or watches his speech is that, no matter what career one decides to chose to make sure that you love what you are doing. Otherwise, your job will feel like a pain in the butt and life will not be completely full of happiness. In order to live a meaningful life, do the what you like, do not go around with your head down and arms crossed. Speak up, you can make a difference. To me the most important key to life is not to conform, just because someone else tells you to do a certain thing it does not mean that you HAVE to. You have the decision to take a different path for your well being. Like Steve Jobs' said in this particular address, "Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life."

There's No Turning Back

You came in my life and left.
You made it hard for me to trust others.
You want in again, but I don't give second chances.
You, yes you, turn 180 degrees and walk the path that you decided to take without me a long time ago.

Back to the Old Routine

So you are sitting in your first class of the semester. You look through the window and see the nice warm weather, butterflies flying around, and people sitting under the sun enjoying a good conversation with friends; and you are only thinking one thing, "I want this class to end." But then you think through again and realized that you just had three full months of summer break and plenty of time to enjoy the sun, but yet again all you want is to be outside.... That's exactly how I felt in my very first class of the semester, but hey I don't blame myself because I am sure that there were others in the class thinking the same thing. Some would say that three months is plenty of time to enjoy a summer break. Well that is not exactly right when the beginning of the school year is still during summer. And now instead of being inside writing this blog I should be outside under a tree listening to music, and why not having some ice cream also. I mean, it doesn't hurt anybody.

Hey, but not everything about school is downhill. There is also my friends that I had not seen during summer that I finally got to see in my very first day of school. I saw my beautiful Dying Chicken who looks a little different physically, but her laugh is still the same which I love! Then there is Cookie Monster, which to tell the truth there is nothing different. Same Oshani that left school on May. Same smile, same name (of course! duh!), same hair, same eyes, same-same-same everything! Finally there is Giggly Puff, same everything also. She still has that obsession of glitter and pink stuff. Until yesterday I thought that she came close to being the twin of 'Legally Blonde' without the blonde hair. OH YEAH! Before I forget even thought this girl may seem sweet because she loves pink and glitter she also has her dark side like anybody else. To the point that she is already of thinking of continuing with her torture...Yuli, yah know what I'm talking about.

Other than that I am definitely looking forward to this year.

Armando, you're a Dragon now!

Today as I drove my brother to school so many memories came back to me. I remembered that six years ago like him I was heading to Sonoma Valley High School to start my first day of school as a freshmen. Now I can't believe that he is the one going thru this day. Time flies by! As I pulled into the parking lot and  he opened the door I looked around as if waiting to see any familiar faces, but none. Like always, I only saw a group of four girls paying very close attention as one of them talked. And oh boy am I sure that they were gossiping about summer already. Who doesn't?! Especially if they haven't seen each other during the whole summer. Well...I wished him luck and drove back home. I will confess that I felt weird driving back home so early without worrying about going to school. Well not for another couple of days. I just hope that he enjoys his four years as a Dragon as I did.

As I type I am wondering how he's day is going. Hopefully fine or even better! At least not like my first day of high school hahahaha because I got lost heading to my first class. My FIRST class, it was not a good way to start my morning. Ugh! But leaving that behind I cannot believe how far both my sister and brother have come. I am sure that my brother's four years in high school will fly by and when least expected he will be heading off to his first day of college.

Beach Time!

It's not that I want to be a show off or anything like that, but I felt the urge to show how beautiful a day at the beach can be. A few of months a go I went for a couple of days to Mazatlan with the family. I got to say that it was one of the best trips I've made to the beach. I got to experienced the day and night life of this city.

Everywhere you go at night, there is music playing. From mariachi, pop, R&B to techno. People are out of their hotel rooms in their best night outfits cruising the streets around 'Zona Dorada,' and looking for a good place to have some fun with friends and family until late into the night.

Early in the morning people are already out and ready to begin another day. Taxis are driving down the streets slowly, waiting for a client to ask for their service. Tourist are walking down 'Camaron Sabalo' and 'De Mar' looking for a good restaurant to have breakfast.

Mazatlan may not stand up as a beautiful beach when a tourist is looking through a brochure with beaches such as: Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, Acapulco, Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, and Cabo San Lucas; but one thing is for sure. However you decide to spent your time at any of these beaches is what makes the place valuable and beautiful.

My dad is one of those guys who does not like getting near the water because he thinks that a shark will attack him. He has a phobia for sharks, but I don't blame him. I just want to say: STOP watching shark movies and Shark Week on the Discovery Channel! Here he is, enjoying a warm morning with of course, his cup of coffee.

Out of the two days I spent in Mazatlan I only took pictures on the last day. I got into the beach mood and just spent my time with my family around the city. Truthfully, I simply enjoyed my time there.

One of the best parts of this trip was seeing all the tourist walking down the beaches. It shows that even though the violence among drug cartels has been growing a lot in the last years it does not stop travelers from visiting the unique landscapes of my beloved, Mexico.

Before I left Mazatlan I had to show my appreciation for two amazing days with the family. I showed some love to Mazatlan, but quickly before the wave came in and vanished my artwork.
